Peter Lloyd became Consul General of Canada for Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in November 2006, upon appointment by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. As Canada’s senior diplomat serving the four-state region, Mr. Lloyd comes to this assignment after filling a wide range of senior managerial positions in the Federal Government of Canada and with extensive experience working on international issues.
From 2004 until his appointment as Consul General, Mr. Lloyd served in Ottawa as the Director General of the Communications Branch of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the agency responsible for Canada's international development activities such as poverty reduction and other assistance to the world's poorest nations. From 2000 to 2004, Mr. Lloyd oversaw the Political/Economic Relations and Public Affairs section of the Canadian Consulate General, New York, Canada’s second-largest mission in the United States.
Prior to moving to the United States’ financial and media capital, Mr. Lloyd was Canada's High Commissioner (Ambassador) to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, a strategic energy-rich country in the Caribbean. There, he managed a staff of more than 60 and oversaw bilateral relations and, as Canada's representative to the Association of Caribbean States, dealt with a range of regional trade and political issues impacting Canada’s relations with the Caribbean region, Mexico and Central America, and the northern tier of South America.
Between 1986 and 1997, Mr. Lloyd held numerous high-level communications posts for Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada in Ottawa, including serving as Director General of Communications. In that capacity, he was responsible for the communication both domestically and internationally of all aspects of Canada's foreign and trade policies.
Before joining the Government, Mr. Lloyd worked as a journalist for major national print and television news organizations in Montréal and Ottawa. He grew up in Toronto and is a graduate of the University of Toronto. Away from work, Mr. Lloyd enjoys golf and other sports, travel and outdoor activities. Mr. Lloyd and his wife, Geri Horsford, reside in the Consul General’s Official Residence in the Capitol Hill section of Seattle.
