Thought Leader Profile

Jonathan Hurst

Chief Robot Officer, Agility Robotics

Jonathan W. Hurst is a professor of robotics, co-founder of the Oregon State University Robotics Institute, and CTO and co-founder of Agility Robotics. He holds a BS in mechanical engineering and an MS and PhD in robotics from Carnegie Mellon University. Jonathan's university research focuses on understanding the fundamental science and engineering best practices for legged locomotion, with investigations ranging from numerical studies and analysis of animal data to simulation studies of theoretical models to designing, constructing, and experimenting with legged robots for walking and running.

More recently, Jonathan has also focused on using machine-learning techniques merged with more traditional control to enable highly dynamic gaits. Agility Robotics is extending this research to commercial applications for robotic legged mobility.

Agility's product, Digit, is a human-centric, multipurpose robot designed to operate where people do, use infrastructure designed around people, do human workflows, and interact with people. It is the first such commercially available robot, looking somewhat humanoid in form, made for real-world logistics work.

Agility's vision is to enable humans to be more human. Digit is a robot partner to augment the human workforce, generating greater productivity across the economy and improving quality of life for all.
