Nearly all of us have had the experience: a loved one enters a hospital in the U.S., with family members at her side. Soon enough it becomes apparent that our role as “advocate” is not just helpful, but may make the difference between life and death, as the patient wends her way through a broken system. It is a too-often terrifying experience, both financially and in terms of appropriate and effective care.

Anyone who tells you that the U.S. healthcare system is not badly broken is either not experienced or not being objective.
