I had the chance a couple of weeks ago to spend the day with Vint Cerf, now Google’s VP in charge of Internet Evangelism. In addition to his role in creating the protocol for the Net, Vint used to wear a T-shirt emblazoned with the words “IP Everywhere.”

 

(For those thinking the other thing, IP stands for Internet Protocol.)

 

Although we are running out of domain address space under the current protocol (Vint guesses this will happen within a year or so), implementation of IP v. 6 should provide plenty of room for the next wave of devices, sensors, consumers, and businesses for years to come.

 

When you look at the current landscape of devices and appliances, there is one remaining mountaintop, one last hurdle, a towering K2, which, like the mountain itself, has claimed more bodies (or corporate product chiefs) than almost any other challenge.

 

Yes, we’re talking Television.
