HUMAN SYSTEMS, TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS

By Mark Anderson

Why Read: From Twitter and Tesla to China and America, we are living in an era in which we expect advanced technical solutions to solve the problems inherent to human systems. Only by understanding the deep reasons for the failures behind this mismatch will we be able to move forward.

Autonomy

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting with what may be the top AI team in Ireland. Among them were two professors with a lifelong background in autonomous-driving challenges, ranging all the way from what kind of cameras to use for a 360-degree view to how to recognize and avoid accidents in the making.

As we sat around the conference table, I said I wanted to check out an opinion with them: "I am of the belief that it is not possible to have autonomous driving, or flying, without explainable AI. What's your view?" Without a moment's hesitation, they agreed.

Of course, the unspoken problem behind this statement is that, as a Lawrence Livermore National Lab scientist said recently, there is only one company on the planet that has XAI today. [Disclosure: I am CEO of that company, Pattern Computer, which is why I was in Ireland and the UK.]

And if the statement is indeed accurate, the world has a big problem, on many levels.
