We appear to be leaving the time when profit dollars per company was the best way to measure the uptake of technology by users. In fact, the uptake of technology may itself be a new way of viewing progress by global IT vendors.
If computers drop by half in price, and users keep buying them, is this a catastrophe or a major win for the industry? I think MS or Intel would call it a catastrophe, but I believe Google or Amazon, Verizon or Symantec, Adobe or Liberty Media, would see it as a win.
