PATTERN COMPUTING:

From Pattern Recognition to Pattern Discovery,

From Prediction to Understanding

By Mark Anderson

Last week I had the pleasure of being interviewed for the ai.Hamburg fAIstival, with longtime SNS members Ragnar Kruse and Petra Vorsteher at the controls.

The sweep and structure of this conversation allowed me to link virtually all of the historic steps that have led from early steps in pattern recognition, from the concept invention of the Pattern Recognition Processor to the creation of Pattern Computer Inc. at FiRe, and now into much deeper and more advanced technical discoveries made by the Pattern team.

Many members will immediately recognize the difference between the bounded world of neural networks and their abilities, and the achievements available when one starts instead with the mandate to find patterns.

For these reasons, I've decided, with permission from Petra and Ragnar, to share this interview with all of our SNS members this week. You can imagine that you're sitting with your AI colleagues in Hamburg, and around the world, as you watch and listen in to this story, which I think you'll find both exciting and useful:

fAIstival.hamburg Woche | Session 2 - YouTube

Afterward, I hope you will consider emailing your thoughts to me. As you know,

Your comments are always welcome.

Sincerely,

Mark Anderson

EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT FOR MARK ANDERSON

If you are interested, or know someone you think would be great for this position, please let me know at the address below. - mra

Position Available: Executive Assistant of CEO

Do you enjoy working in a small-team, fast-paced environment? Does the idea of cutting-edge technology and learning something new spark your interest? If yes, then this is the job for you.

We are looking for an Executive Assistant to the Chair/CEO of three companies. Two are focused on sharing information - via newsletters, events, and conferences - about the intersection of technology and the economy. The third is a 6-year-old computing company that is all about cutting-edge technology.

Strategic News Service: SNS's main focus is on reporting-out tomorrow's news today. The weekly SNS Global Report on Technology and the Global Economy is written by Mark Anderson and his staff and is read by C-suite executives, investors, academia, and large companies such as Microsoft and Accenture.

Future in Review (FiRe) Conference & FiReSide Events: The ideas from the Global Report come into fruition in our monthly virtual FiReSide events and our annual FiRe Conference. Ideas are discussed and solutions are created. One such creation originated at the 2015 FiRe Conference: Pattern Computer Inc.

Pattern Computer Inc.: PCI is a pattern-discovery company that finds novel patterns in complex data that cannot be discovered using conventional techniques or tools. The company has developed a proprietary computing system to process extremely complex datasets in almost every industry imaginable. The PCI team chose to begin with breast cancer because they wanted to make a difference. They are similarly now also working in recognizing patterns in aerospace, mining, oil and gas, energy, flight operations, and feedlot health.

Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of working in a fast-paced office setting
  • Experience in Microsoft Office 365, planning meetings and events, arrange travel (both domestic and international)
  • Great customer-service attitude
  • Ability to multitask is a must
  • Willingness to learn and ability to pick up on new ideas and tasks quickly
  • Experience with Accounts Receivable, payroll (ADP system), and HR
  • Flexibility and self-confidence
  • College degree in Business Management is a plus; experience in the Executive Assistant role is a requirement

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct administrative and scheduling assistance to the CEO of Strategic News Service, Future in Review, and Pattern Computer Inc.
  • Assist in coordinating projects and planning support as needed
  • Attend and host weekly virtual team meetings, preparing weekly report-out outlines
  • Prepare mailings, press releases, research reports, and other documents as required
  • Address needs of staff and assist with tasks in circulation, accounts receivable, invoicing, payroll, HR functions (Pattern Computer), and other support functions
  • Independently handle preparations and logistics for meetings, conferences, and other events, including domestic and international travel arrangements (does not include program management)
  • Act as a correspondent to business contacts and provide excellent customer service to clients
  • Maintain and organize confidential business files and maintain complete operational security, as defined by the CEO, at all times
  • Maintain a cheerful and positive attitude, communicate clearly and in a timely fashion on all issues of importance, and be flexible in work hours and locations, as needed

Please send resume to Mark Anderson at mark@patterncomputer.com.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"Private capital has a vital role to play in supporting the creation and growth of innovative climate-focused solutions like Form Energy's," said Marc Mezvinsky, a member of the climate investing team for TPG Rise. Former US Treasury secretary Hank Paulson serves as TPG Rise Climate's executive chair alongside TPG's co-founder, James Coulter. Form Energy has developed a battery that uses iron and air to store energy for days rather than hours as lithium-ion batteries currently do. The company says cheaper energy storage will enable the use of intermittent renewable energy all year round, similar to a coal-fired or gas-fired power plant. "What we are betting on is a mega-trend that is not going away," said Mateo Jaramillo, a former Tesla executive who co-founded Form Energy in 2017. - The Financial Times

Re:  SNS GLOBAL REPORT: PATTERN ECONOMICS

Mark,

As you probably know, there is an old joke that goes like this:

An economist, an analyst and a trader are walking down Wall Street when the trader spots a $20 bill lying on the sidewalk. "Look," he says, "A $20 bill."

"Impossible," says the economist. "If there had been a $20 bill lying there, someone would have picked it up."

"Wait right here!" says the analyst, who runs off to get his notebook.

The trader picks up the bill and puts it in his pocket.

That's what America gets for not paying attention. It also got Afghanistan. What's next? Who's next?

On June 25, Japan ratified the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), the Asia-Pacific trade agreement encompassing the members of ASEAN (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam), Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan and South Korea. All of the Asia-Pacific democracies signed up.

Japan was the third to ratify, following Singapore and China. RCEP will enter into effect 60 days after it is ratified by at least six ASEAN members and three other signatory countries.

South Korea is probably on board, taking care of the three. Six ASEAN signatories does not look like too high a hurdle. Will Australia renege and annoy all the other countries as well as China?

A negative cannot be proven, but predicting the crash of China has been a loser's game for 20 years.

George Soros is a genius currency speculator and a spokesman for the 0.1%. China is run by engineers who must deliver or face 1.4 billion unhappy people.

In the six months to June, Japanese exports to China increased by 27% year-on-year to 8.6 trillion yen ($79 billion), the highest level on record since comparable data became available in January-June 1979.

Shipments of semiconductor production equipment were notably strong, data confirmed by investor relations reports from the companies involved.

Japan's imports from China increased by 14.5% to 9.7 trillion yen ($89 billion) led by cellphones and laptops, resulting in a manageable trade deficit of 1.1 trillion yen ($10 billion).

The U.S. ran a trade deficit with China of $27.8 billion in the month of June alone.

RE:  SNS GLOBAL REPORT: ALL THE PRESIDENT'S ANTITRUST (WO)MEN

Berit,

Letter to editor of Press Democrat:

Diverting ourselves

EDITOR: Watching a full morning of news everywhere dedicated to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's resignation, I began pondering what else might have been addressed in that time. For instance, am I alone in having no idea of actual steps our government pursues to fight global warming? Has a single coal-fired power plant been taken offline? Any talk of metering nonessential driving even numbered license plates some days, odd on others?

Any discussion about training military regiments as firefighting support and diverting money from unnecessary battleships and missiles to converting cargo planes to water tankers? We get the stock market numbers all day long, what about Environmental Protection Agency updates?

As an inveterate consumer of news and political articles, if I can't answer, "What are we doing about global warming," I have to assume others can't either. Shouldn't use of the public airwaves involve some responsibility to educate the public about critical issues in addition to selling their attention to advertisers? Mark Zuckerberg did not make that one up, and with identical motives, it is no accident that news stories are framed for maximal emotional reaction, exactly like Facebook.

We are diverting ourselves to death.

Subj.: Why China's reining in billionaires

Mark,

Nathan Gardels offers fine insights about China in the latest Noema update, showing that Beijing's recent reining-in of billionaires is not hypocritical, but actually consistent. I have elsewhere explained why I believe the PRC's program is not a good future model for humanity (it merely tweaks and improves the same pyramidal/feudal command structure that proved stupid and oppressive across 99% of 6000 years), but that's not what's at issue here.

I can count on my fingers the number of folks I know who have even a superficial grasp of Marxism, or 'development levels,' or materialist teleology... or why Marx's future-aimed predictions went all-wrong, leading both the USA (under Roosevelt) and modern China to develop mixed and regulated versions of capitalism.

Ironically, of course, the current world oligarchic putsch, especially in the US, has had the effect of turning western capitalism into something much more like Marx predicted, on trajectory toward his Final Crisis, proving yet again that sycophant-flattered-lobotomized oligarchs are the humans least qualified to rule. We do have a chance to restore a Rooseveltean social contract that lures the working class back into a thriving and dominant middle class and restoring truuly fair-open-creatively competitive markets, something Marx thought impossible. But time is short.

Good stuff. https://www.noemamag.com/it-is-no-longer-glorious-to-get-rich-in-china/

Subj.: China, ARM and "Tech Heist of the Century"

Mark,

I enjoyed Thursday's Zoom [SNS August FiReSide interviews] about chips. The next day I saw this article on substack about the Chinese subsidiary of ARM and thought it would interest you, as it is called "The Tech Heist of the Century."

Mark,

This a "Science Magazine" article that tries to debunk the Wuhan-Lab leak theory.

Even though it is published in a usually reliable technical journal, (of which I am a life member ), it has authors who are Chinese citizens.

So, WTF, there is no use trying find the origin of the "big bang". We need to move on and cope with a very unpleasant reality. As my friend, Mark Anderson, said yesterday, COVID may be just a smoke screen about the real issue between China and the US viz a viz chip storage which leverages everything we make and use. The "war" not a trade war. It is, in the worst case, about national economic survival, and in the best case, about a very unpleasant quality of US life 5-10 years from now.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Louie Schwartzberg | Director, Producer & Cinematographer

Member Type: Creator
Member #: 11481

Louie Schwartzberg is an award-winning cinematographer, director, and producer who has spent his career providing breathtaking imagery using his time-lapse, high-speed, and macro cinematography techniques. He is a visual artist who tells stories that celebrate life and reveal the mysteries and wisdom of nature, people, and places.

Louie's theatrical releases include the 3D IMAX film Mysteries of the Unseen World with National Geographic, narrated by Forest Whitaker; the theatrical feature Wings of Life, for Disneynature, narrated by Meryl Streep; and America's Heart and Soul, for Walt Disney Studios. Louie also directed Soarin' Around the World, the most popular motion simulator ride film now playing at Disney Theme Parks globally. His Moving Art Netflix is currently in Season 3. Designed to inspire, educate, and evolve our perspective on the world, each episode immerses viewers in the natural world, taking them on a journey through time and scale.

Louie's new film, Fantastic Fungi, explores the world of mushrooms and mycelium and illustrates how this fascinating organism can provide sustainable solutions to some of the world's greatest problems - treating cancer, Alzheimer's, and PTSD; saving the bees; cleaning the atmosphere; and shifting consciousness. The film received a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and spent four weeks topping the documentary charts on iTunes.

Louie is also currently developing Visual Healing, an immersive health & wellness program maximizing his award-winning body of work to reduce stress and anxiety. Visual Healing has been piloted at the new billion-dollar Jacobs Medical Center at UCSD, as well as the Dallas Center for Brain Health. It forms part of the Wellness programs at Post Ranch Big Sur, Cavallo Point Inn SF, Kamalaya Resort Koh Samui, and others.

Louie is the only artist to be inducted into the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Lemelson Foundation's Invention Ambassadors Program. In 2017 he received the Debra Simon award for Leadership in Mental Wellness from Global Wellness Summit. He was Oprah Winfrey's guest on Super Soul Sunday, and his Gratitude Revealed programs premiered on the OWN online platform.

For Louie, the greatest satisfaction is creating works that can have a positive effect on the future of the planet. "I hope my films inspire and open people's hearts. Beauty is nature's tool for survival - we protect what we love. That is the shift in consciousness we need to sustain and celebrate life."

SNS Connection: FiReFilms CEO Sharon Anderson Morris first introduced Louie Schwartzberg as a FiRe speaker in 2013 on the filmmaker panel discussion "Can Documentaries Become the Glue Between Technology and Social Policy?" and the breakout "Documentaries and the Corporate World: Uniting for Global Challenges." In 2014, she interviewed him as part of the Utah FiRe/Park City Institute Speaker Series (see link to photos below). Several more interviews or hosted Q&As followed over the next 5 years at both live and virtual screenings of Fantastic Fungi, from early footage to its completed, award-winning version in 2019. We applaud Louie's beautiful work and meaning, and its wide recognition today.
