PATTERN COMPUTING: From Pattern Recognition to Pattern Discovery, From Prediction to Understanding By Mark Anderson Last week I had the pleasure of being interviewed for the ai.Hamburg fAIstival, with longtime SNS members Ragnar Kruse and Petra Vorsteher at the controls. The sweep and structure of this conversation allowed me to link virtually all of the historic steps that have led from early steps in pattern recognition, from the concept invention of the Pattern Recognition Processor to the creation of Pattern Computer Inc. at FiRe, and now into much deeper and more advanced technical discoveries made by the Pattern team. Many members will immediately recognize the difference between the bounded world of neural networks and their abilities, and the achievements available when one starts instead with the mandate to find patterns. For these reasons, I've decided, with permission from Petra and Ragnar, to share this interview with all of our SNS members this week. "Private capital has a vital role to play in supporting the creation and growth of innovative climate-focused solutions like Form Energy's," said Marc Mezvinsky, a member of the climate investing team for TPG Rise. Former US Treasury secretary Hank Paulson serves as TPG Rise Climate's executive chair alongside TPG's co-founder, James Coulter. Form Energy has developed a battery that uses iron and air to store energy for days rather than hours as lithium-ion batteries currently do. The company says cheaper energy storage will enable the use of intermittent renewable energy all year round, similar to a coal-fired or gas-fired power plant. Re: SNS GLOBAL REPORT: PATTERN ECONOMICS Mark, As you probably know, there is an old joke that goes like this: An economist, an analyst and a trader are walking down Wall Street when the trader spots a $20 bill lying on the sidewalk. "Look," he says, "A $20 bill." "Impossible," says the economist. "If there had been a $20 bill lying there, someone would have picked it up." "Wait right here!" says the analyst, who runs off to get his notebook. The trader picks up the bill and puts it in his pocket. That's what America gets for not paying attention. It also got Afghanistan. What's next? Who's next? On June 25, Japan ratified the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), the Asia-Pacific trade agreement encompassing the members of ASEAN (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam), Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan and South Korea. All of the Asia-Pacific democracies signed up. Japan was the third to ratify, following Singapore and China. RCEP will enter into effect 60 days after it is ratified by at least six ASEAN members and three other signatory countries. South Korea is probably on board, taking care of the three. Six ASEAN signatories does not look like too high a hurdle. Will Australia renege and annoy all the other countries as well as China? A negative cannot be proven, but predicting the crash of China has been a loser's game for 20 years. George Soros is a genius currency speculator and a spokesman for the 0.1%. China is run by engineers who must deliver or face 1.4 billion unhappy people. In the six months to June, Japanese exports to China increased by 27% year-on-year to 8.6 trillion yen ($79 billion), the highest level on record since comparable data became available in January-June 1979. Shipments of semiconductor production equipment were notably strong, data confirmed by investor relations reports from the companies involved. Japan's imports from China increased by 14.5% to 9.7 trillion yen ($89 billion) led by cellphones and laptops, resulting in a manageable trade deficit of 1.1 trillion yen ($10 billion). Andrew Cuomo's resignation, I began pondering what else might have been addressed in that time. For instance, am I alone in having no idea of actual steps our government pursues to fight global warming? Has a single coal-fired power plant been taken offline? Any talk of metering nonessential driving even numbered license plates some days, odd on others? Any discussion about training military regiments as firefighting support and diverting money from unnecessary battleships and missiles to converting cargo planes to water tankers? We get the stock market numbers all day long, what about Environmental Protection Agency updates? As an inveterate consumer of news and political articles, if I can't answer, "What are we doing about global warming," I have to assume others can't either. Shouldn't use of the public airwaves involve some responsibility to educate the public about critical issues in addition to selling their attention to advertisers? Mark Zuckerberg did not make that one up, and with identical motives, it is no accident that news stories are framed for maximal emotional reaction, exactly like Facebook. Subj.: Why China's reining in billionaires Mark, Nathan Gardels offers fine insights about China in the latest Noema update, showing that Beijing's recent reining-in of billionaires is not hypocritical, but actually consistent. I have elsewhere explained why I believe the PRC's program is not a good future model for humanity (it merely tweaks and improves the same pyramidal/feudal command structure that proved stupid and oppressive across 99% of 6000 years), but that's not what's at issue here. I can count on my fingers the number of folks I know who have even a superficial grasp of Marxism, or 'development levels,' or materialist teleology... or why Marx's future-aimed predictions went all-wrong, leading both the USA (under Roosevelt) and modern China to develop mixed and regulated versions of capitalism. Ironically, of course, the current world oligarchic putsch, especially in the US, has had the effect of turning western capitalism into something much more like Marx predicted, on trajectory toward his Final Crisis, proving yet again that sycophant-flattered-lobotomized oligarchs are the humans least qualified to rule. We do have a chance to restore a Rooseveltean social contract that lures the working class back into a thriving and dominant middle class and restoring truuly fair-open-creatively competitive markets, something Marx thought impossible. Mark, This a "Science Magazine" article that tries to debunk the Wuhan-Lab leak theory. Even though it is published in a usually reliable technical journal, (of which I am a life member ), it has authors who are Chinese citizens. So, WTF, there is no use trying find the origin of the "big bang". We need to move on and cope with a very unpleasant reality. As my friend, Mark Anderson, said yesterday, COVID may be just a smoke screen about the real issue between China and the US viz a viz chip storage which leverages everything we make and use. The "war" not a trade war. It is, in the worst case, about national economic survival, and in the best case, about a very unpleasant quality of US life 5-10 years from now.
