Why Read: While the Anthropic crew is marketing their large language models as humanity-ending murderers that are also religious beings who might need to confess as in the Catholic tradition, and OpenAI ships product (or threatens to) with less chain of thought explainability, even as it fires members of its safety team ... it is not just possible, but also likely, that this whole hype circus can be reduced to a single tech storyline, without any of what the Irish, in a recent peer-reviewed paper, labeled "bulls**t."

In this discussion, we will provide that simple thread. - mra

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

- "Macbeth," Act V, Scene V

Recently, I promised SNS members perhaps the shortest piece I had ever written for the Global Report. I am pleased to say, this week's may be even more to the point, and therefore shorter.

At a time when the US Federal Trade Commission and other agencies around the world are rushing to make new regulations and laws and enforce existing ones against the top makers of chat products (large language models), and both criminal and civil lawsuits are piling up against the companies and their officers, and the CEOs are hanging around DC and Florida hoping for get-out-of-jail-free cards even as their marketing and PR departments increase the drumbeat of fear and terror around the world - it seemed a good time to simplify.

This is, after all, a story that can be told in a single dimension.
